Floreal Blanc de Blanc 2013

Grapes The Floreal consists mostly of Muscat d’Alexandrie grapes. Together with our own grapes we also used grapes from the Franschhoek wine region. The Muscat grapes showed a rather low sugar content during harvest time. This is balanced by the fully ripe Chenin Blanc, which forms the second component of Floreal. The Chenin Blanc grapes are from our own vineyards at Onderkloof. All grapes were hand-picked and transported in 20 kilogram crates to the cellar.

Vinification After the destemming and crushing, the Muscat d’Alexandrie grapes were pressed under reductive conditions. The Chenin Blanc grapes were pressed in whole bunches and fermented under a low temperature. After three months’ of storage on the lees, the wines were blended in an appropriate proportion to each other.

Tasting notes On the nose, the Floreal proves to be very fruity and aromatic with distinct components of Muscat. On the palate, the Chenin Blanc in conjunction with the residual sugar delivers a pleasant fullness. It is a harmonious blend of fruity acidity and delicious sweetness. A loyal and enthusiastic fan base has built up over the years due to the uniqueness of this blend as well as the charm of this wine.

Our recommendation The Floreal is refreshing and ready to drink. It is suitable for aperitifs and spicy dishes such as curries, or Mexican and oriental cuisine.

Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Grapes The vines were farmed organically. All grapes were harvested from a single four hectare vineyard in Stellenbosch, 3 kilometres from Onderkloof. The small yield of 4 tons per hectare resulted in concentrated flavours. The actual harvest period lasted for three days. In order to deliver the grapes in a cool condition, they were only harvested in the mornings. They were hand-picked and packed in 20 kilogram harvest crates for transport to the cellar.

Vinification The grapes were hand-sorted prior to the destemming and crushing processes. The mash macerated for 6 to 9 hours in the membrane press under exclusion of air. Prior to bottling the wine was in contact with its fine lees for a maximum palate.

Tasting notes On the nose, the wine shows concentrated, tropical and refreshing flavours such as guava and grapefruit. On the palate, it has a very full bodied and fruity character. Fine fruit acidity accompanies the long and harmonious aftertaste.

Our recommendationWe recommend serving the Sauvignon Blanc with apéritifs, fish, light meals, cheeses and hot cheese dishes.

Cabernet Franc RosÉ 2014 “ Bottleneck”

Grapes After a hot harvest day, our pickers brought, to our surprise, another 4 tons of harvested Cabernet Franc grapes. All the tanks in the cellar were already filled to capacity and hence we were confronted with a serious bottleneck. The only available container was the wine-press. Consequently we started a new adventure; we launched the “Bottleneck RosÉ”.

Vinification After sorting and destemming, the mash was stored for 12 hours in our press. The fermentation took place with selected yeasts. The wine was bottled only 3 months after the harvest.

Tasting notes The wine shows on the nose and pallet fruity flavours of raspberry and strawberry. A bit of acidity is well combined with a little sweetness.

Our recommendation Our Rosé is a great choice for the summer. It suits perfectly with light meals such as melon, ham, salad and salmon.

PINOTAGE 2012

Grapes Pinotage is an authentic South African wine variety. A cross between Pinot noir and Cinsault, it was grown for the first time in 1925. Working with this grape variety is quite challenging and requires effort and careful selection to vinify its powerful but fine and elegant character.

Vinification The grapes were harvested on the slopes of Schapenberg, which crosses the highest altitude of our farm. The single terroir is 1.3 hectares. These are the only bush vines on the farm and must be harvested painstakingly in a kneeling position. The vines grow on the barren and rocky, but well-drained, soil of Onderkloof and are not irrigated. This creates the incomparable strong fruit flavour. Our Pinotage was matured for 18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour. The bouquet is delightfully spicy and intense, with full fruit flavours. The full-bodied structure of Pinotage is maintained throughout its long-lasting aftertaste.

Our recommendation The Pinotage is well-suited to red meat, barbeques, pastas and cheeses.

CABERNET FRANC 2011

Grapes Cabernet Franc grapes are not as common as Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It was most likely created from a natural cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.  Cabernet Franc grapes are typically used for wine blends because of its low tanins. Because we were so impressed with the quality of these grapes, we decided to bring a pure Cabernet Franc on the market. The grapes were hand-picked and not irrigated.
The grapes come from a single vineyard on our neighbouring farm.

Vinification The wine has been naturally fermented. The grapes were pressed after 30 days and the young wine then aged for two years in French barrels.

Tasting notes The Cabernet Franc is a harmonious, balanced wine. The strong body is well combined with a spicy nose. The compote aromas combine very well with the wood aromas from the French barrels, which all together gives this wine its elegant character.

Our recommendationThe wine is well-suited for red meat and cheese dishes.

Shiraz 2012

Grapes The grapes are from a 0.7 hectare large vineyard just next to our cellar. This block of Shiraz is the only vineyard we planted on our own since we took over the farm in 1997.

Vinification After fermentation with selected yeasts and a post maceration, the wine was kept for 24 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes The wine pleases with its intense ruby colour. On the nose it spoils pleasure-seekers with a beguiling berry-spicy taste of dark fruits such as cherries, black currants, blackberries and blueberries. The flavour is harmoniously combined with the oak note and presents a lively but warm character. The long-lasting aftertaste is an enjoyable finish.

Our recommendation This elegant Shiraz accompanies all meat and delicious cheese dishes.

SIR LOWRY 2011

Grapes The Sir Lowry is our only red blend. It consists of three Rhone varieties – Merlot (50%), Shiraz (30%) and Petit Verdot (20%). These three grape varieties proved to make a harmonious combination and give the wine an exclusive touch.
All the grapes are from the Stellenbosch wine region. The grapes were harvested by hand and vetted before processing.

Vinification The wine was naturally fermented and aged for two years in French barrels.

Tasting notes The dark coloured wine possesses pleasing aromas of red berries and is infused with the refined taste of oak. The wine has an enjoyable long lasting aftertaste.

Our recommendation This wine accompanies all meat and cheese dishes.
